The April Fair is one of the most colorful events in Spain, attracting visitors from all over the world to enjoy its unique atmosphere. This 2024, Seville is once again preparing to continue this centuries-old tradition with a celebration that promises to be unforgettable.

When is the Seville Fair 2024?

Seville's April Fair begins one or two weeks after Holy Week. Although the exact dates are subject to the liturgical calendar, this year, the fair begins at 0:00 hours on Sunday, April 14 with the "alumbrado", the act of lighting the thousands of light bulbs that adorn the façade and the fairgrounds, and ends on Saturday, April 20 at 00:00 hours, with a fireworks display. This festivity usually lasts for a week full of joy, music, dance, and Andalusian culture.

Origin of the Seville Fair

The Seville Fair has its roots in 1847 when it began as a livestock fair. It was devised by two councilmen, José María Ibarra, and Narciso Bonaplata, as a commercial event for the farmers and ranchers of the region. Over time, the fair transcended its initial purpose and became a celebration of Andalusian culture. Today, the fair is famous for its traditional “casetas”, flamenco, food, and wine.

Traditions at the Seville Fair

The Seville Fair has a wide variety of activities. Some of the most outstanding are:
  • Casetas: these are temporary structures installed in the fairgrounds where families, friends, and associations gather to share food, drink, and good company. Some booths are public and others are private, accessible only by invitation.
  • Horse rides: a tradition in which riders and carriages parade through the fairgrounds.
  • Dancing and music: Flamenco is the heart of the Feria de Abril. It is common to see people dancing sevillanas.
  • Gastronomy: tapas and typical Andalusian dishes, such as "pescaíto frito" (fried fish) and Iberian ham, are essential at the fair, often accompanied by a glass of fino de Jerez or manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
  • Attire: many attendees wear traditional costumes, such as the flamenco dress for women and the short dress for men.
