Singles' Day: date, origin and how to celebrate the holiday

In recent years, Singles' Day has gained popularity around the world as an occasion to celebrate singleness and self-love. Although it originated in China as a sort of counterculture to Valentine's Day, it has evolved into a globally recognized celebration.

When is Single's Day?

International Singles' Day is celebrated every year on November 11, as the date (11 of 11) consists only of the digit “1”, which symbolizes loneliness and singleness.

Origin of Singles' Day

Singles' Day originated as a joke among friends at Nanjing University, China, in 1993. The idea came about as a way to rebel against the social pressure they faced for not being in a relationship. In Spain, the tradition arrived approximately 10 years ago and, over time, the term “San Solterín” has emerged to refer to this holiday.

Singles' Day Today

Although originally created to make single people proud of their marital status, under the name Singles' Day, this day has largely become a discount campaign, similar to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
